A friend of mine asked me one day “What is a sales letter?”. As I know, the Internet provides lots of information and I advised him to google the question for finding his answer. I was very surprised when he told me that he didn’t found what he was looking for. Almost all the information that is on the Internet about the sales letter is how to write one. But before writing a good sales letter, of course, we must know what it is. So I decided to approach this issue in this article.

First of all, let’s analyze the words that compound the sales letter concept. When reading the words, we think of a letter that should bring sales. As it is a letter, it must be addressed to somebody. As it should bring sales, the letter must be about a product that is presented in a manner that must convince the reader to buy it.

As the first result on Google shows us, a sales letter is “a form of direct mail in which an advertiser sends a letter to a potential customer”. Yes, most of the times, these sales letters are sent through e-mails. This way, it is more possible for the letter to be read, especially if it contains the reader’s name.

Other than through e-mails, sales letters can take the form of a site. A very simple site, containing only the persuasive letter. This is a very common way to make a sales letter. These kinds of sites are the ones where you scroll down a lot in order to read all the content.

Finally, to have a more clearly idea about what really is a sales letter, I would make a comparison. You can think of a sales letter to be something like teleshopping. The seller is trying to get the attention of the potential buyer by highlighting the best of the best of his product. But the composer of a sales letter is getting your attention in a more elegant way.
